I am frequently asked about my technique for working with people who have Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Luckily, since I have O.I. Type 1, I’m well-versed in what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle with the disorder.
After I went through my personal physical transformation at the age of 42, I immediately knew I wanted to help others that lived with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (O.I.). To do this, I continued to work on myself as well as study and gain knowledge about personal training.
I obtained my certification as a Personal Trainer and began to develop methods to help fellow O.I.ers get into exercise, start moving their bodies, and living healthier lifestyles.
My motto came about quickly, even as I was disabling my disability!
BREAKING BARRIERS, NOT BONES!
This is the motto for any of my clients that have Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
Different types of O.I. have different levels of severity, but for me, it doesn’t matter what Type of O.I. you have.
My goal is to help you determine appropriate exercises for your type.
I will work with you to determine S.M.A.R.T. goals and assess your current functionality so that the exercises you do will be appropriate and help you reach your physical goals.
I will build workout programs that are powerful, yet gentle and safe, specific for you and your type of O.I.
Again, since I have Type 1, I understand not only the physical limitations but the psychological and emotional obstacles that we face.
I assure you, there are plenty of options available for you to succeed!
The bottom line is that even though our bones may break easier, that doesn’t mean that we should move and strengthen our muscles. By exercising, we can increase bone density, strengthen muscles, tendons, and ligaments to protect our bones, and increase stamina by building our cardio-respiratory strength!
If you would like to break some barriers, not bones, please contact me to discuss your options.
